Video Call - 16th May 2022 - Elder East's Final Zone Conference

Another rundown of Elder East's week in the mission field. On the evening of the previous P Day, the APs went over to the Travers family in Firle Ward. Whilst there, they were presented with a belated birthday cake for both of them. The Travers were originally going to be providing Elder East a cake on his birthday until the Covid isolation intervened.

Elder East also took a photo of their cat. He's a doppelganger of our cat Matt Matt back home.

On Tuesday they had a Stake Missionary Correlation Meeting as well as spent a lot of time in the Mission Office. They were able to teach a lesson to a man and his children in the afternoon. The same family would end up coming along to Church on Sunday which was a great step for them to take.

On Wednesday they had the Firle District Council. This included some singing practice as the District was going to be providing a musical item at the next Zone Conference. In the late afternoon, the APs were able to go and do a session in the Temple. Whilst in the Temple they happened to run into the Lees from Elder East's home ward. Brother Lee is from Adelaide and was back there visiting family.

On Thursday they met with the Senior Couples in Adelaide to work out the logistics for the following week. There will be 15 missionaries leaving the AAM and going to their original assignments in New Zealand, another 2 missionaries coming in, and 2 missionaries finishing up their missions. Sixteen missionaries all need to be at the Adelaide airport for a 6am flight next Monday (23rd May). They're flying up to Sydney and then on to their various destinations from there. Because most of them are heading internationally, they'll all have to be at the Adelaide airport by 3:30am. Quite a logistical task.
Later in the day, the Ward Mission Leader took them out to Hungry hacks for dinner.

On Friday they had a combined Zone Conference between 9am and 3pm for the two Adelaide zones. As a part of the Zone Conferences, those who are leaving the mission get to give a farewell testimony. With all of the New Zealanders getting ready to leave, they gave testimonies, however, Elder East wasn't asked to, even though it was his last Zone Conference. We figure that President Johansson must have either forgotten or not realised it was Elder East's last conference too.

Elder Easts ent us through a number of photos of the Zone Conference. First up is a photo of when he was teaching that one of the Sister Missionaries took.

Then there are a couple of group photos. We're assuming that one is of just his Zone, and the other one is both Zones that were in attendance at the Conference.

Then we have some photos from after Conference. The first is with Elder Gard sitting on his knee. The story behind this is that in mission vernacular, a missionary you train is jokingly referred to as your son. Elder East trained Elder Rea, and Elder Rea trained Elder Gard, so this is a "grandfather & grandson" photo - hence the "grandson sitting on the grandfather's knee" pose and expressions.

The final one is a photo of Elder East with two of his previous companions - Elder Rea and Elder Brown.

On Saturday they had breakfast with a Senior Missionary Couple at the Bishop's home. The rest of the day was spent on trade-offs manning a stall at the Marion Stake Family History Day. They helped set up the stall in the morning and then manned it during the afternoon. In the evening they went for dinner at a Sister's home. She had a cat that Elder East made friends with, of course.

On Sunday, they had the family whom they taught on Tuesday come along to Church.

Some other quick notes from our chat:
  • Both Elder Rea and Elder Gard are part of the group of missionaries due to depart to missions in New Zealand.
  • Elder East has started two modules of his "My Plan" program that helps missionaries prepare for returning home.
  • Elder East still hasn't heard anything re his University application.

Video Chat - 15th November 2021 - Called as an Assistant to the President

In a huge surprise, Elder East let us know last P Day that he was being transferred yet again. Elder Rea was Elder East's third trainee and he has yet to finish training one of them. The transfer news was rather exciting and intimidating though. He was told on the Saturday night (13th Nov) to pack his bags because he was being transferred but he thought it was just the APs playing a joke on him. It turns out that they weren't. Elder East was called to be a new Assistant to the President to be companions with Elder Read.

Elder East is sad to be leaving Port Pirie, he'd expected to be spending Christmas there. He didn't get to say goodbye as they had arranged to be attending church in Whyalla on Sunday (14th Nov) and visiting investigators and members in Whyalla and Port Augusta during the day.

Elder Brown will finish training Elder Rea - the second time Elder Brown has finished the training of a missionary who started with Elder East. Elder East says that Elder Rea is strong - he'll be a good missionary.

The traditional rundown of Elder East's week.

Tuesday was spent doorknocking in the rain.

On Wednesday they had a big companionship study session preparing for several planned lessons later in the day. Unfortunately, both of the lessons ended up canceling, but they thought the preparation they had done was really good. Elder East said that they then went and visited a nearby small town to ascertain if they were going to undertake some missionary work there. Then it was time to drive down to Adelaide where they stayed with other Elders overnight.

Thursday was a special devotional for the AAM missionaries. Elder Lekias, the Area Authority was there in person, but they were also joined via video by Elder Kazuhiko Yamashita, the second counselor in the Pacific Area Presidency, Elder Carl B Cook from the Presidency of the Seventy, and Elder Ulisses Soares from the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. Elder East said that the devotional was good. All four of the area and general authorities spoke to them about their missionary service. He was called up by Elder Lekias at one point to share the purpose of being a missionary. Elder East thought it might be because Elder Lekias knows our family, however, we found out later that he'd actually asked for a recommendation from President Johansson on who to ask up, and President had recommended Elder East.

On Thursday evening Elders East and Rea spent the night down in Adelaide, spending the evening phoning people around Whyalla and Port Augusta to visit on Sunday.

They drove back to Port Pirie on Friday morning and then spent the afternoon doorknocking and doing lessons.

Elder East said they had a lot of lessons on Saturday.

Sunday they headed out to Whyalla for Church. They have their own chapel and had 23 in attendance even though they were missing a couple of families, so Whyalla Branch is actually bigger than Port Pirie. Elder East commented that the main entrance into Whyalla is through the industrial part of town. He said that it looked like the setting for a Young Adult dystopian novel. Having said that, once you were in town there was a nice view out into the bay. Being a holiday area the town also has a lot of touristy things to do.

At the Whyalla Sacrament meeting they had the opportunity to bless the sacrament for the branch. Their investigator wasn't able to come to Chruch that day, but they were able to meet up with another former investigator and a less active member family in Whyalla and have lessons with both. They also caught up with a family in Port Augusta and had a lesson with them too. Elder East said that all of the lessons they had that day were really nice and that he enjoyed them. They arranged to eb able to keep in touch and continue teaching with all of the people they visited. They learned on the way back to Port Pirie that the APs weren't joking about Elder East being transferred, and Sunday night was spent starting to pack.

When we spoke to him on P Day he said that he'd only been down in Adelaide for about 2 hours, having left Port Pirie around lunchtime. He said that some of the other missionaries were acting a bit differently around him now that he was about to become an AP. He commented that the APs flat was big. They quite often have to accommodate missionaries in transit both in and out of the mission, along with transfers and conferences.

Typically APs serve for about three transfers, so he's hoping for a bit of stability in his new role. He doesn't know many of those in his new district, only having served around one of the 8 missionaries. He thinks that his role will now be more orientated towards ministering to missionaries rather than directly proselyting. The APs physically attend Firle Ward, but are remotely responsible for Mildura Ward. As an AP he is likely to travel a lot on tradeoffs and to accompany President Johansson as he travels in his official capacity.

He mentioned that one of the people he had been teaching in Onkaparinga Ward is now in Firle Ward so he might be able to catch up with them.

Video Chat - 11th October 2021 - Elder Haycock Comes and Goes

It was a busy week for Elder East. He flew down to Adelaide for transfers on Tuesday morning (5th Oct). knowing that his trainee wasn't arriving straight away. He would go out to join Elders Brown and Burgess in Tea Tree Gully Ward. It would turn out that his trainee, Elder Haycock, from Perth, would be arriving the following day.

Wednesday was Elder East's grandmother's funeral, and he had permission from President Johannson to join in watching the broadcast of the funeral service and burial. Elder Haycock's flight arrived whilst the funeral was on, so Elder East didn't go to meet him at the airport. They then spent the rest of Wednesday doing training and admin with Elder Haycock, staying overnight in Adelaide with Elder Reeves and his companion.

On Thursday they then drove up to Port Pirie and spent the day cleaning up the missionary flat from the previous Elders as well as unpacking and setting up their own stuff.

On Friday they started to focus on more training for Elder Haycock, including watching a bunch of videos that are part of the training. To do this they went to the chapel to be able to use the internet connection for the video streaming. After finishing in the evening they went back to their flat, and as they were trying to get into their flat, the front door key broke. OK ... time to call the mission office to find out if there's a spare key. Unfortunately Elder East realised his phone only had a 3% charge left before it would go flat.

They did manage to get in touch with the mission office but had to spend Friday night in a motel with nothing but the clothes on their backs. On Friday morning they then had to drive halfway down to Adelaide to meet up with the APs who had a spare key to their flat at the mission office.

Whilst all of this was going on, Elder Haycock had received a call to let him know that his elderly father had been admitted to hospital. His parents are not overly active in the Gospel and his Mum, who is from the Philippines has little in the way of a local support network. She was asking that Elder Haycock come home from his mission for support.

The Elders went to the chapel for the Saturday evening broadcast of general conference. During the evening  Elder Haycock was able to contact his father who also requested that he come home to help. Elder Haycock spoke to President Johansson and then his Bishop and Stake President back in Perth. He made the decision that he would head back home to assist even though he wanted to be staying out in the mission field.

On Sunday morning they went to the general conference broadcast and managed to catch up with Craig, a gentleman who describes himself as a "professional investigator." They were invited along with Craig to a member's house for lunch. She was an older lady who has a reputation for unusual food recipes from old cookbooks. Elder East advised that lunch included such things as curried bananas and a salad made from rockmelon, capsicum, onions and marshmallows.

After their meal, they spent Sunday afternoon repacking their bags and then heading down to Adelaide. They had dinner with the Port Pirie branch president in Kadina, a town about an hour south of Port Pirie on the way to Adelaide. After dinner, they were able to teach a lesson to the Branch President's family before making their way down to Adelaide to stay with the Playford Elder's overnight.

Now, on P Day, Elder East was with other missionaries at a P Day activity in Fremont Park. Elder Haycock would be flying home on Tuesday (12th Oct). Both Elders East and Haycock said that they knew that it was sad for him to be returning home after having just arrived but they knew it was the right decision. As the entire situation unfolded, Elder East said that things just kept "happening" but he felt calm and OK about how things were progressing. Elder Haycock wanted to stay out in the mission field but wanted to be able to return and help as well. He is wanting to return back to the mission field when he can.

My personal opinion is that sometimes we shouldn't second guess the Lord. Maybe Elder Haycock will get the chance to return quickly and enjoy a full two-year mission. Maybe all that the Lord required from Elder Haycock was to prepare and show that he was ready to serve a mission. Having shown his willingness to do so, maybe the Lord knows that his responsibilities now lay with looking after his parents for a long time. Maybe his service will fall as a mixture between the two. As long as we try and seek Heavenly Father's will for us and try to align ourselves to it, we will be an instrument in the Lord's hands to help others in His way.

A few other tidbits of information about Elder Haycock:

  • He plays gridiron competitively back in Perth. He had been planning to go to the USA to play gridiron before Covid hit.
  • Elder Haycock knew both Holly Olde and Connor Dowe, people that Elder East knew from Perth
  • Elder Haycock and Elder East both attended FSY in Perth in 2018. They were in different groups, but did know some of the same people from FSY.
  • Elder East says that Elder Haycock was really into cars.
  • Even though they only served together a short time, they got on really well, and Elder East would love to catch up with Elder Haycock back in Perth after both of their missions are finished.

Video Chat - 4th October 2021 - Transferred To Point Pirie via Tea Tree Gully Ward

The big news from Elder East was that, yes, he is being transferred. He will be heading down to train a new missionary out in Port Pirie. There is however a snag in that there are some issues with getting his trainee into the mission. Consequently Elder East would be flying down to Adelaide on Tuesday morning and then serving in a three-way companionship until his trainee arrived.  He would be joining Elders Brown & Burgess in Tea Tree Gully Ward. Elder East has previously served with Elder Brown back in Onkaparinga Ward. Elder Bianchi is a relatively green missionary from Huonville in Tasmania.

As much as Elder East is sad at leaving Darwin, he's happy to be serving in a regional town. The area also covers the Port Augusta and Whyalla Branches, but he doesn't know how much they'll get to go and work outside of Port Pirie.

Elder East will no longer be Zone Leader, having been one for about 10 months. He thinks that training will be harder from a teaching point of view, but easier from a 'living" point of view than being a  Zone Leader.

Elder East is excited to see Elder Brown even though it's only until his trainee arrives. This will be the third three-way companionship he's had with Elder Brown.

This is only a very small transfer, with few missionaries moving and only two new missionaries coming into the mission. Elder Aiho - another of Elder East's old companions - finishes his mission before the next transfer so he's being moved into a three-way companionship, and his companion is being transferred up to Alice Springs.

Last week they spent a bit of time with the Darwin Elders. The Darwin Elders are involved with community basketball, so they spent time playing basketball and talking to people on Tuesday afternoon, and then a full trade-off over the Thursday and Friday. Elder east was with Elder Nalesoni - another of his old companions.

Elder East said that they taught a lot of lessons throughout the week. They had lessons with most of the people they had been working with which went well. They had Camille, a less active recent convert, come along to Church which they were happy to see. Elder East knew about transfers before Church started so he was asked to share his testimony during the meeting. After Church they got to go and provide sacrament for a sister out on a property. Elder East was quite impressed that she had emus and peacocks roaming around her property.

Transfer Photos - 1st June 2021

The AAM Blog updated with photos of the missionary transfer that happened on Tuesday 1st June. These photos went up before we'd spoken to Elder East on P-Day the following day, so we saw pictures of him at the transfer, but didn't know if he'd been transferred to a new area or had a change in companion(s) ot otherwise affected by transfers. The fact that he was physically at the transfer meeting tends to suggest he was somehow affected.

Elissa was happy to see that Elder East had received the package with the winter coat that he was after.

It's not that hard to play "Where's Elder East?" in these photos. Whilst almost every other missionary is in thick jackets to keep warm, Elder East is there in just a white shirt with rolled-up sleeves ...

The first photo is the Zoom meeting on the previous night letting the missionaries know what was happening.

The rest of the photos are from transfer day itself.

Arriver Training Photos - 12th & 13th May 2021

The AAM Blog has put up some photos of the missionary intake from the 12th May. This includes the Arrival Dinner ion the evening of the 12th May, and the Arriver Training on the 13th May. As a joint trainer of Elder Davey with Elder Brown, there are obviously several photos of Elder East.

I've done the usual search and download from the blog so that you the reader can play along with "Find Elder East!".

The first three photos are from the Arriver's Dinner, whilst the second lot of three photos are from the Arrviers Training day.

Adelaide Airport Lunch with Dad - 17th May 2021

I emailed President Marquis prior to recently going over to Western Australia, requesting:

President Marquis,

I will be flying between Perth and Canberra on Monday 17th May and will have a 4.5hr stopover in Adelaide between 11:30am and 4pm.

Would it be possible for me to catch up with Elder East and his companions and to take them to a short lunch (assuming he is still in Adelaide post the 12th May missionary intake)?

I understand if it’s not allowed, but thought I would ask and see if it was possible.

Thanks for all you are doing for Elder East and the other missionaries,

President Marquis responded back:

Thank you for reaching out. I’m sure a short “reunion” at the airport would be a boost to Elder East. If he does not feel it would be a distraction, I’m happy to have him meet you at the airport. There are restaurants in the airport terminal and there is also one just off the main baggage claim area in the Atura Hotel which is connected to the airport. I’ll leave it to you to talk with him about this and to coordinate the details. I do not know yet whether he will be impacted by the transfer next week but it is the case that even if he were, he’d still be serving in Adelaide as all our outlying areas are currently closed except Darwin and I do not anticipate any changes in Darwin on 12 May.

Sister Marquis and I love Elder East and are grateful to you and Sister East for raising up such a valiant and noble son. He is a true blessing to the AAM.

Following the approval from President Marquis, we arranged to meet up at the airport at noon on Monday 17th May.

I arrived at Adelaide Airport from Perth about 11:30am on the Monday morning, and received a message from Elder East just after noon that they had arrived. We quickly found each other and I was introduced to his two companions - Elder Brown, and his new trainee, Elder Davey from Rockhampton in Queensland.

I treated all three to a lunch of gourmet salads from Soul Origin at the Airport and we spent our time chatting. Whilst in Perth I had grabbed a bunch of Magic The Gathering booster packs as a gift for Elder East. I know that he often plays the game with other missionaries during their spare time on P Days. He was quite happy with what I'd bought him.

It was great seeing Elder East. He looks like he's lost some of the weight that he'd put on - he is trying to be conscious of his health. More importantly, he carried the Spirit with him and he sounded and acted like somebody who has been set apart as one representing the Saviour Jesus Christ and who is there to serve others.

It was great to spend time seeing him again after 11 months. It was only an hour of time spent with him and his companions, but it was an awesome time to treasure until we see him in person again in mid-2022.

Video Chat(s) - 12th May 2021- Training, Transfers & Grandparents

P-Day was punctuated by three short video chats with Elder East as his big news was that he was going to be training a new missionary from the mid-cycle intake coming in that day.  He didn't have any details of the new missionary, but he would still be in a three-way companionship in Onkaparinga Ward. He would still be staying with Elder Brown as Zone Leaders whilst they trained the greenie together. Elder Cooke was being transferred out to another area.

Because of transfers, he wouldn't get long to chat with us. I also didn't get any screenshots during the calls and didn't get any photos from Elder East, so this is a pictureless update.

When he did call, he hadn't been chatting long when there was somebody banging on the window wanting help. He said he'd try calling Elissa again later but didn't get a chance to.

A few other items that were mentioned:

  • Elder Reeves was being transferred down from Darwin and would be staying with them overnight.
  • Elder East is wanting to get a new jacket to wear with non-proselyting clothes. He says that his trench coat is fine when he's in missionary gear, but no good if exercising, P Days, service activities, etc.
  • President Marquis had granted permission for Elder East and his companions to come out to see me during my four hour stopover at the Adelaide Airport the following Monday.
  • Elder East had also been given permission to participate in the Canberra Stake Youth Fireside the following Sunday evening.
Elder East had two quick video calls with his grandparents - one with Grandad and one with Nanny during the afternoon. Adam was currently with his parents down in Albany. They were only short calls but they were both happy to see him and told him how proud they were of him.

Video Chat - 28th April 2021 - ANZAC Day and Birthday Surprises

Elder East started off our weekly video chat by letting us know that he had another companion – Elder Cooke. He was now in a three-way companionship. Their companionship got the call at 6:40am on Tuesday morning to be at the chapel by 9:30am for their scheduled interviews with President Marquis … and to pick up their new companion. Elder East thinks that their three-way companionship will only last for a couple of weeks as there are a bunch of new missionaries scheduled to arrive on May 12th.

Elder Cooke is from Brisbane (like most in the AAM) who came out into the mission in January. Elder East describes Elder Cooke as being a “White Poly” who is into games. In fact, Elder East reckons that he himself is the least "nerdy" member of their three-way companionship - funny noting that he is a self-confessed geek/nerd.

A summary of the week:

On Thursday of last week they received an invite to Saturday dinner from the Mahina family in the ward.  When they got to the dinner on Saturday evening, Elder East was greeted with a surprise birthday combination of Star Wars and Lego

On Saturday night, after the dinner, Elder East prepped all the ingredients for “Dad’s chilli recipe” ready for his birthday dinner on Sunday.

Sunday was also ANZAC Day, so they were up at 4:00am, left the flat at 4:40am and went to the Onkaparinga Memorial Gardens for the local ANZAC Day Dawn Service. I had organised tickets for them earlier in the week and emailed them through to Elder East after confirmation that they were allowed to attend.  They said that the service didn’t actually start til 5:50am, so they got there too early. Elder East says the service was good. He reckons that there were probably over 500 in attendance, and they did see some other members there at the service.

Elder East cooked up the chilli in the morning after returning from the Dawn Service.

At church that day the Sacrament Meeting had a missionary theme, so Elder East was one of the speakers. His topic was “Feed My Sheep”. He said that he talked about how they were all there at Church because we have some level of love for the Saviour. Also, that one of the ways we can show love for others I to be friendly, smile and similar in our actions.

Elder East mentioned that they took on teaching lady that the Sister Missionaries had started teaching.  She came along to Church on Sunday along with her husband and son.

Whilst at Church the Ellis family called the Elders into the kitchen. There they had a birthday cake and treats for Elder East - it also happened to be the birthday of their twin children.

Elder East said that they got to teach a lesson in the afternoon, and then for dinner got to have the chilli that Elder East had cooked earlier.  He says that it was OK, but it tasted like a “normal” chilli, and not like Dad’s chilli.

Elder East says that he got spoilt with presents for his birthday. He had previously received a package from us and from the Reeves before his birthday. He said that the mission couple happened to come by on the day as well, and he received a package from Grandma, as well as his mobile phone case that I’d ordered for him

Amongst the photos Elder East sent us, he included these photos, but I'm not sure of the stories behind them. Noting who is in each picture, I'm presuming that the photo with all three elders in it would've been taken on Tuesday 27th April, with the other being taken earlier in the week.

A couple of final dot points from the week:
  • They visited a member's home on Monday night and she decided that she was doing a  personality test on the Elders. She reckoned that Elder East was "officious, logical and would make a good Stake President." He's not sure what he thinks of that assessment.
  • Elder East has lost 3kgs in weight - down from 96kgs to 93kgs. They're trying hard to be healthy.
